| SEE ALSO: General Catalogs above and By-Province below. A "core" library on struck copper for the non-Chinese reader is: 1) An older copy of Krause's SCWC China section (such as 1996 ed.) - only so you can make sense of for-sale offers, 2) Zhou & Li, 3) Woodward, English-language edition, and 4) Michael Zachary's works, as they appear. | ||
| Zhou Qinyuan & Li Pingwen | Concise Catalogue of Modern Chinese Copper Coins (2nd Ed.) This Western-friendly Chinese coppers catalog features excellent, slightly-enlarged photos and Woodward references for many varieties. The level of varieties distinguished is well beyond KM/SCWC but not quite as fine as Woodward, Duan, and various other Chinese works. Numerous enlarged detail panels help distinguish varieties, important given lack of clear descriptions and decent photos in the KM/SCWC. Unique numbering system, Renminbi valuations in five grades, Chinese text. Western auctions often references this work ("CL") and in working up a huge stock I found it, along with Woodward, to be the most practical reference for Western collectors. The larger-format 2018 2nd edition adds a few types with "a" numbers, many more detail insets, and completely revised pricing. A quick takeaway on the pricing changes since 2012 is the greater separation between grades (particularly in the EF-MS60 range), reflecting the maturing of the market. 294p, 7.5x10", hc, 2018, OP & hard to find | |
| Zhou Qinyuan & Li Pingwen | Concise Catalogue of Modern Chinese Copper Coins (3rd Ed.) Revised 2024 edition with 382 pages, same format as 2nd ed. Many new additions, and including machine-struck cash, more varieties than in Burger. 382p, 7.5x10", hc, 2024, | INQUIRE |
| Woodward, A.M. Tracey | Minted Ten Cash Coins of China The in-depth work, classifying this bountiful series in much finer detail than KM. Originally published as a series of articles 1926-36 in The China Journal, this is the only reprint. Plates are only fair, so counting dots and dragon scales takes patience and sharp eyesight. 151p+43pl, 6x9", sc, 1936R1971, OP, [Photocopy of the 1971 reprint $25]; Clean copy with minor underlinings, owner's name, etc. in ink. | 100.00 |
| Zachary, Michael | The Ten Cash Commentary: The General Issue Ten Cash Coins of the Republic of China Detailed catalog of Y301-311 & later Fen (Y347-363) issues. Excellent enlarged photos and detail sections plus extensive text allow even the novice to distinguish among 162 listed varieties, vs. 49 in KM and 125 in Woodward. Duan's 2005 listings are incorporated, where significant & new varieties are published for the first time. 72p, sc, 8.5x11", 2015 | NOT IN STOCK |
| Duan Hong Gang | The Comprehensive Catalog of Chinese Copper Coins The 2005 2-volume work catalogs 3960+ struck coppers with #, description, specs, rarity rating, and a separate plates volume with good color photos of every type/variety. Uses Woodward's (10 Cash) alphanumeric obv/rev system but, adds new discoveries in order, so later entries in each series will not correspond. Some enlargements of key details help distinguish varieties. Includes all denominations (except square-holed 1-cash), contemporary forgeries & errors, 200+ tokens, and 44 recent fakes. The catalog volume includes numismatic history by Province, including some new mint attributions (Chinese text). This is the edition western auctions refer to. The 2003 Guanxi work lists nearly twice as many varieties. ; 463("447")p+474pl, 2vhc, 7.5x10.5", 2005, OP; reportedly costs around US$300 in China now;   2010 (reprinted 2012) one-volume work (Zhong-guo Tong Yuan Fen?) lists 2416 types, omitting minor varieties and text descriptions but including more plate insets showing key differences. Plates are mostly Woodward-style, with obv. and rev. types, the combinations catalogued in a chart following each section. Valuations in two grades. Numbering differs from the 2010 ed. (no concordance). 498("483")p, hc, 6x8", 2012, OP; 2007 and 2017 sc works appear to be articles on classifying and collecting, not catalogs. New 2020 edition available here. It is not much changed from the 2010/12 editions except for the prices. Nice copy of the in-demand 2005 edition (writing on inside flyleafs) | 250.00 |
| Ho, David | Copper Coins of Modern China Catalog with reference #'s and excellent, slightly-enlarged color photos of each type and variety. Extensive Chinese text. Includes some tokens & medals, but have not compared to Zhou & Li for comprehensiveness of variety breakdown. 246p, hc, 8.5x11.5, 2012 | 65.00 |
| Guanxi Num. Soc. | Research to the Forms of Ancient Chinese Ten Cash Detailed catalog of struck (not Ancient) 10-Cash varieties, all illustrated in color plates. Each basic type is broken down in a chart, then varieties illustrated , with Chinese description below, keyed to design elements. The depth of analysis is impressive; taking Kiangsi Province as an example, Krause & Mishler list 37 varieties of 10 Cash, Woodward 140, Duan Hong Gang 260, and this work 425. More difficult for non-Chinese reader to use than the Duan Hong Gang work. The photos are full size (i.e., too small), and often dark, or of corroded coins. 392p, 8.5x11.5", hc, 2003 | NOT IN STOCK |
| Dai Xiaobao | (Catalog of Chinese Ancient Copper Coins Plates) Text-heavy four-volume set covering varieties of Empire and Republic coppers. Photos are full-size, generally well-lighted, decent specimens. Presumably the text describes differentiating features. 4v, 766p, 7x9.5", hc, 2014. Cost about $200 from an ebay seller. | NOT IN STOCK |
| Zhao Hue Yuen (Henan Numis. Soc.) | Zhongguo Qianbi Dacidian (Great Dictionary of China Numismatics) (Daxi) Vol 10?: Empire Copper For the cast coinage, this series is considered the best. The first volumes covering struck coins and paper money have come out recently. I suspect there are not as many varieties of 10 Cash as the Duan and Guanxi works. There are enlarged inset photos of distinguishing characteristics for some of the varieties, but either good familiarity with the series, or ability to read Chinese is critical to making use of the listing. The 10-Cash series wears me out, so I don't plan to do a detailed comparison, but the Tibet series, which I know better, is good, certainly more detailed than any Western work. The section on struck square-hole cash is amazing - more varieties and types than I ever knew existed. Also covered: some contemporary forgeries, and misc. HongKong and foreign coppers. 384p, 7.5x10.5", hc, 2008 | 165.00 |
| Zhao Hue Yuen (Henan Numis. Soc.) | Zhongguo Qianbi Dacidian (Great Dictionary of China Numismatics) Vol 13?: Republic Copper For the cast coinage, this series is considered the best. The 10-Cash series wears me out, so I don't plan to do a detailed comparison. The Tibet section is so-so, with one of each date shown, no attention to varieties. Also covered: some contemporary forgeries, Horse tokens & other tokens. 278p, 7.5x10.5", hc, 2009 | 125.00 |
| Cheng (Zheng) Ren Jie | Chinese Copper Coins (Zhongguo Tong Yuan Ch'ien Shang) Catalog of 785 struck coppers with #, specs, rarity ratings, color photos of decent specimens. By Taiwan's leading copper collector. The first detailed Chinese work on struck copper, it is still used by Western auctions ("CCC,") even though later works, such as Duan, and Zhou & Li, are far more usable and comprrehensive. Brief histories of major types, but lacking Kann's monetary history, and depth of minor varieties. Covers silver and gold Ch'ienlung through 1949, Fantasies, Xinjiang, Tibet. | Kann, Eduard | Illustrated Catalog of Chinese Coins Long-time standard in-depth work on gold, silver, nickel. More historical information and depth of varieties than KM. | Kann, Eduard | Illustrated Catalog of Chinese Coins (2006+ Reprint, Ishi Press, print-on-demand) An unauthorized "revised" edition was done in 2006 in three paperback volumes. There are no text revisions, and the plates, which are conveniently incorporated into the text, are significantly worse than those in the hardcover editions. There are no updated valuations as claimed in advertising; for this, see the Lin & Ma reference which now determines the worldwide market. At about $60 this reprint is no bargain, but may serve the needs of casual users who do not need to distinguish close varieties (which can differ greatly in value). A rather unfavorable review appears in J.E.A.N. #2. | NEVER IN STOCK |

| Yin Zheng Min | Zhong guo xi zang qian bi tu lu (Illustrated Catalog of the Money of China's Tibet) Comprehensive variety/date catalog of Tibet & Malla coins and paper, all illustrated with color photos. Generally a finer breakdown than KM, with 91 examples of Gaden Tanka (Y13), for example. Specialized western works such as Bertsch on Srangs, Gabrisch on Szechuan Rupees, and Bertsch or Narbeth on paper are still better, but there are undoubtedly discoveries to be made here by even the most advanced collector. Chinese, but very little text and some photos use arrows or drawings to highlight differences. Best single Tibet catalog to date. Extensive critical review and supplement by Wolfgang Bertsch in JONS #188 (Summer, 2006). Not well bound, so expect pages to come loose with serious use. 261p, 5.5x8.25", sc, 2004 (New, signed by author $60); Nice slightly used: | 50.00 |

| Gabrisch, Karl | Geld Aus Tibet Concise history of Tibetan money and fairly comprehensive photo-illustrated type catalog including newly published items. Excellent photos. | Tibet Autonomous Region Numismatic Society, ed. | Currency of Tibet, China This huge, 492p, 8.5x11.5" hardcover is merely the photos volume in a projected 3-volume set! The best features are the many dies (205 of them!), printing blocks and banknote oddities, weights (multiple views), scales, a gold bar, sycee, counterstamps, mint errors, coin jewelry, tamgas, and other odd objects, but the basic coin presentation is disappointing. No doubt close study of the hundreds of photos will pay off here and there, but there is no detailed breakdown of varieties, nor analysis of complex series such as Gaden tankas. The banknote photos are gorgeous, but the coin photos and specimen quality are highly variable, the coppers being mostly too dark. All photos are color and the presentation is lavish. Little text, but all Chinese, including captions. Brief English preface and contents page. Four historical maps. 2002 Extensive critical review and supplement by Wolfgang Bertsch in JONS #177 (Autumn, 2003). | 150.00 |
