No matter what modern series you collect, you will find something here that you might want, or want to avoid. Fang, Alex ChengyuChinese Charms: Art, Religion and Folk Belief   In a world where image threatens to eclipse reality, Alex Fang has produced a dangerous book. The most finely crafted examples of Chinese metallic charms appear in oversized photographs displaying such beauty and detail as to almost devalue the originals. Some of those originals were once mine, part of a massive multi-collection philistine's hoard assembed since the 1960s. Reluctantly, in view of the author's clear enthusiasm and growing scholarship, I sold him a few choice pieces, and this book is my closure. Those wonderful charms - and so many more - have come back to me larger and even more beautiful than when they departed. This book displays the best of the author's collection, the cream from the golden age of charm use, the Han through the wane of Empire. Released to accompany the first ever public exhibition of Chinese charms, held 12 July - 24 August 2008, at City University of Hong Kong, and like other catalogs based on top collections, the danger lies in elevating the ordinary collector's tastes. Who will buy that 1970's Hong Kong copy of a zodiac charm on ebay after seeing this book? The magnificent photos (276 catalogued) are accompanied by bilingual descriptions, and background information on charms as art and religious objects, considered in 6 broad categories. Introductions are bilingual, and some text is exclusively Chinese, but there is more than enough to orient the Western reader unfamiliar with the field. Check here for contents and several sample pages.   420p, 8.25x11.5", hc, 200875.00
