EAST ASIA (except China)

This is perhaps the largest for-sale offering of Asian numismatic titles. Listings are bibliographic by country and include useful titles not currently in stock. Use the buttons below to find specific countries. Listings with blue background are standard references or important generalized works for this category. Red author name links to a scan of the cover, and red title links to a sample page, or contents page. [Estimates] in parentheses are informational, not a for-sale offer. Small Order Charge under $10.
I have tried to stock collector-friendly works in Western languages, but do not overlook good works in Asian languages. Many have little text at all, and the pictures, valuations, and basic data can be understood by Western readers. Please let me know of any new or missed works not listed here. I buy books. Libraries and single copies are wanted.

Mihailovs, V., & Krisadaolarn, R.Siamese Coins: From Funan To The Fifth Reign   A rich sourcebook for the study of Thai numismatics in general, and a functional catalog for three series currently lacking comprehensive coverage: The Mon / Pyu symbolic coinage, the "ingot" coinages of Northern Thailand (tok, lat, flower, c'ieng, etc.) and pod-duang, or bullet coinage. For the first time excellent color photos and descriptive data are given for nearly all known types and varieties, even while questions of attribution remain. There are fascinating discoveries in the flat coinage of 1835-1910 as well as good, non-comprehensive coverage of south Thai jokoh and other tin tokens, Prakab, early gambling tokens, and Patani-Kelantan gold. The inclusion of old and new forgeries and fantasies, and summaries of Thai collector opinion and market wisdom are two features very useful to the Western collector. Includes brief political and monetary histories of Siam and 130pp of early travellers' accounts, Royal monetary proclamations, and other documents, all translated to English. Bibliographic notes throughout point to deeper discussions of topics. The excellent color plates, which cover most known types and varieties, are coordinated with the text and can be used as catalog references. These are supplemened by an additional 1000? enlarged images on a DVD, showing more specimens, and more angles for the three-dimensional monies, derived from the principal author's collection, various private, and major public collections in Thailand. Winner of 2013 First Prizes for Numismatic Literature from both IAPN and PNG.   251?p+55cpl, hc, slipcase, DVD, 8.5x11", 2012, List price US$ 100.00; Out of Print shortly after release, but still available from Charles Davis at $110.

Hartill, DavidEarly Japanese Coins   The new standard work on pre-Meiji coinages: cash, silver, gold, and a selection of e-sen. Includes introductory material on reigns, calligraphy, historical and numismatic introductions to each series, and a fascinating period scroll illustrating the steps in cash manufacture. The listing format is user-friendly, as in his China work, including illustrations, cross-references to JNDA and other specialized works, and rarity guide. Descriptions are given of the salient differences among varieties that are otherwise difficult for Western collectors to distinguish; a special finding guide for the maddeningly detailed Kanei Tsuho is alone worth the price of the book. Unfortunately only a small percentage of even the common Kanei varieties are listed here, and the more comprehensive Japanese works covering them are difficult to obtain.   154p, sc, 8.25x11.75", 2011, List $17.95; also available as an e-book.17.00

TIBET
Yin Zheng MinZhong guo xi zang qian bi tu lu (Illustrated Catalog of the Money of China's Tibet)   Comprehensive variety/date catalog of Tibet & Malla coins and paper, all illustrated with color photos. Generally a finer breakdown than KM, with 91 examples of Gaden Tanka (Y13), for example. Specialized western works such as Bertsch on Srangs, Gabrisch on Szechuan Rupees, and Bertsch or Narbeth on paper are still better, but there are undoubtedly discoveries to be made here by even the most advanced collector. Chinese, but very little text and some photos use arrows or drawings to highlight differences. Best single Tibet catalog to date. Extensive critical review and supplement by Wolfgang Bertsch in JONS #188 (Summer, 2006). Not well bound, so expect pages to come loose with serious use.   261p, 5.5x8.25", sc, 2004    (New, signed by author $60); Nice slightly used: 50.00

Tibet Autonomous Region Numismatic Society, ed.Currency of Tibet, China     This huge, 492p, 8.5x11.5" hardcover is merely the photos volume in a projected 3-volume set! The best features are the many dies (205 of them!), printing blocks and banknote oddities, weights (multiple views), scales, a gold bar, sycee, counterstamps, mint errors, coin jewelry, tamgas, and other odd objects, but the basic coin presentation is disappointing. No doubt close study of the hundreds of photos will pay off here and there, but there is no detailed breakdown of varieties, nor analysis of complex series such as Gaden tankas. The banknote photos are gorgeous, but the coin photos and specimen quality are highly variable, the coppers being mostly too dark. All photos are color and the presentation is lavish. Little text, but all Chinese, including captions. Brief English preface and contents page. Four historical maps. 2002    Extensive critical review and supplement by Wolfgang Bertsch in JONS #177 (Autumn, 2003).150.00

Hartill, David, and Op den Velde, WybrandCast Korean Coins and Charms    New standard Western work on the series, building on Mandel and various Korean works. Coin listings use Mandel's format and an expansion of his numbering system, nearly doubling the listings with size and calligraphy variants. Each entry includes rubbing (usually Mandel's), Cat #, cross-ref to KM and (annual) Ohsung catalog, description of variant features, furnace number range, date, and rarity rating. Extensive historical and numismatic information. The charms section has unique cat. #s cross-ref. to Mandel and Han Yong-dal, b&w photo, rarity rating, and good description and translation of the design elements which are further explored in an Iconography section. Koreans believe (correctly?) that charms were made at Seoul-area mints, which would make them, unlike Chinese, Japanese, and other charms, a sort of commemorative coinage. Thus, pieces which do not appear to be "original" are considered worthless in the Korean market. The majority of charms found outside Korea are copies of the the 1950-60s, or earlier, so collectors should be wary of paying significant money for a piece based on apparent rarity. Close comparison to the color photos in the two Korean charm works, or a Korean auction catalog may help, but apparently even Korean collectors will differ on what is an "original."    404pp, 8.5x11.25", hc, 2013 & ebook edition available.   UK and European customers will save shipping costs by ordering from the publisher.PRICE REDUCED 39.50
Lee, K.L. Seo, H.K.Standard Catalogue of Korean Charms & Amulets.    Exquisite full-sized color photos of all known charms and chatelaines, with gm and mm specs and prices. Chapter headings and some introductory material in English, and brief squibs in Korean below some pieces presumably touch on symbolism and use. Korean collectors appear to believe that such charms are mint made, so presumably this work covers only those versions considered "original" in Korea. No cross references to Han Yong Dal, the current Korean standard work on the subject, nor to Mandel, who lists many size variations, some of which are not accepted as originals in Korea. Cost in US would be around $85. I do not plan to stock it, but advise if interested.    353p, 7.5x10.25", sc, 2013 NOT IN STOCK
